How To Defend Your Home From Cockroaches Clamoring To Escape California Heat

Residents of California who have never seen a roach in their home before are increasingly experiencing finding roaches in their homes. The Sacramento Bee reports that cockroach infestations are on the rise. This is caused mainly by the rising temperatures and drought conditions of spring and summer that bring these pests out from the usual damp places they love in search of moisture within the privacy of residential basements and garages.

In addition, California is also experiencing an increase in a fairly new cockroach species, the Turkestan cockroach. This cockroach was introduced to California as pet food for reptiles. Unfortunately, they reproduce at greater rates than the usual American, oriental, brown-banded, and German cockroaches.

How Homeowners Can Control Pests

Controlling pests requires an ongoing maintenance routine. This is just as true for cockroaches as it is for mosquito abatement, spider removal, ant removal, and more. Cockroaches have the ability to flatten out and crawl through openings as small as an eighth of an inch.

While keeping cockroaches from entering your home may not be completely preventable, there are things homeowners can do to make their home a less-inviting environment:

  • Set up a regular housekeeping schedule for vacuuming and washing floors
  • Store food in sealable plastic or glass containers
  • Keep counters, stovetops, and pantry shelves clear of food remnants and crumbs
  • Empty your garbage regularly and keep outdoor and garage garbage cans tightly sealed
  • Repair all leaky and dripping faucets and keep sink drains dry
  • Keep your lawn and yard free of grass clippings and leaf piles
  • Maintain a yard free of debris that can collect standing water
  • Use sealed plastic containers for basement and garage storage instead of cardboard boxes
  • Do not leave pet food and water out overnight, either indoors or outdoors

Pest Control Solutions for Cockroaches

Cockroaches are nocturnal. If you see even one cockroach during the day, it means there are many more. In their one-year-long lifetime, a single female cockroach can produce about 150 offspring.

Cockroaches are not easy to get rid of on one’s own. Because they are known to exacerbate allergies and can potentially bring on asthma attacks, a pest control company should be called in. Ecola specializes in natural pest control solutions that are not only effective but eco and family-friendly.
