Essential Supplies to Grab at the First Signs of a Mouse Problem

Ecola Termite & Pest Control

A few droppings in a cupboard, gnaw marks near a food package or scratching in a wall can signal mouse activity. When we notice these clues, acting promptly can help limit the problem. With a few practical supplies and a clear plan, we can address early activity and decide when it’s time to call in a professional.

Start with traps and cleanup supplies

Snap traps are a reliable option for catching mice. Choose sturdy traps sized for mice, then place them along walls where we’ve seen droppings or signs of travel. Set the trigger end close to the wall, and use a small amount of bait, such as peanut butter. Check traps regularly and follow the product instructions.

We should also have disposable gloves, paper towels and disinfectant on hand for cleanup. Avoid sweeping or vacuuming droppings, which can stir particles into the air. Instead, follow public health guidance for wetting and disinfecting the area before wiping it up. Wash hands thoroughly afterward.

Seal entry points

Mice can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps. Often referred to as a rodent exclusion, this process is a proactive pest-control method that seals off cracks, gaps and holes in a building’s structure that seals off cracks, gaps, and holes in a building’s structure to permanently block rats and mice from entering. Keep steel wool or copper mesh, caulk and expanding foam available to seal off openings around pipes, vents and foundations. Use materials suited to the location, and don’t block vents or other openings that need airflow.

For larger gaps, a hardware cloth patch or metal flashing may provide a more durable barrier. Check door sweeps and window screens, too. Sealing entry points works best alongside trapping; otherwise, mice already inside may remain.

Use repellents with realistic expectations

Peppermint oil and ultrasonic devices are often marketed as mouse repellents, but results can vary. We shouldn’t rely on them as the only response to an active infestation. Keep any repellent away from children and pets, and follow label directions.

Make your home less inviting

Store pantry goods and pet food in tightly sealed containers. Clean up crumbs, empty trash regularly and fix leaks that provide water. Reduce clutter in storage areas so mice have fewer places to hide. Keep firewood and outdoor debris away from the home’s exterior.

If signs continue, traps keep catching mice or activity appears in walls or hard-to-reach areas, contact Ecola Termite and Pest Control for a more comprehensive plan. Call 800-471-BUGS (2847) or visit www.ecolatermite.com for help with mouse, termite or other pest concerns.
