Recognizing the Signs of Termites: How to Detect and Prevent Home Damage

Termites can damage a home out of sight, sometimes for months or years before we notice a problem. Regular inspections help us catch warning signs early, when we can respond before damage becomes more extensive.

Look for visible clues

Mud tubes are a common sign of subterranean termites. These narrow, pencil-width tunnels may run along foundations, walls, piers or plumbing. Termites use them to travel between their colony and a food source while staying protected from dry air.

Discarded wings near windows, doors or other light sources may signal a termite swarm. Swarmers shed their wings after finding a place to start a colony. The wings resemble small, translucent scales and are often found in piles.

Damaged wood can look blistered, warped or uneven. Termites eat wood from the inside, so the surface may appear intact while the interior has been hollowed out. We can gently tap exposed wood and listen for a hollow sound, but this check alone can’t confirm an infestation.

Other clues include small piles of droppings, bubbling paint or doors and windows that suddenly stick. These signs can have other causes, too, so we shouldn’t assume termites are responsible without a closer inspection.

Inspect and reduce risk

We can check basements, crawl spaces, garages and the areas around a home’s foundation for mud tubes, moisture and damaged wood. Look closely at window frames, baseboards and places where wood meets soil. A flashlight and screwdriver can help us examine accessible areas, but we should avoid damaging walls or structural materials.

To make a property less attractive to termites, repair leaks, improve drainage and keep gutters clear. Store firewood away from the house and avoid direct contact between soil and wood siding, deck posts or other structural components. Remove wood scraps and other cellulose debris near the foundation.

Call for professional help

If we find mud tubes, discarded wings or suspicious wood damage, it’s time to contact a pest control professional. Termites can remain hidden, and identifying the species and extent of activity helps determine the right treatment. Early professional attention can limit damage and help us plan next steps.
