Survey Reveals Which Bugs Concern US Residents the Most in Summer

Summer is the busiest time of the year for pests because many bugs such as mosquitos, bees, flies, ticks, fleas, and more thrive in the hot weather. Unfortunately, it’s particularly worrisome to many because it’s also the time of year when we and our families want to spend time outdoors enjoying the beautiful weather.

These Pests Top the List of Concerns

Harris Interactive, on behalf of the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), conducted a survey entitled, “What’s Bugging You?” Results revealed that more than half of respondents were most concerned about contracting a disease from summer pests.
Here are a few more statistics from this survey:

  • 90% of those with children in their homes are concerned about these pests.
  • 11% say they have severe allergies to at least one of these pests.
  • 43% are worried about the pain caused by a sting or bite.

The pests that topped the list of concerns were mosquitos, stinging insects, spiders, and ticks — and with good reasons. Ticks can carry Lyme disease. Mosquitos can transmit West Nile Virus and heartworm in dogs. Those who have allergies to wasps or bees can go into anaphylactic shock, while spider bites can cause pain and swelling.
