The Travel Souvenir No One Wants To Bring Home: Bed Bugs

Out of the 80% of Americans who plan on traveling this summer, none plan to bring home any bed bugs. Yet, according to PestWorld.org, the official website of the National Pest Management Association, nearly all pest control companies have treated for bed bugs and are reporting that bed bug incidences are on the rise this year.

It’s hard enough to control pests that sneak into homes through gaps in windows and doors and cracks around the perimeter of the foundation. But tiny bed bugs that hitch a ride in luggage, bags, and clothing can ruin vacation memories when they start to reproduce and cause physical and emotional health problems for you and your family.

Tips to Avoid Bringing Home Bed Bugs

Bed bugs do not discriminate between a luxury resort or a low-cost motel. The mistake most travelers make is to think it will not happen to them. To give yourself peace of mind during your summer travels, a few quick tasks can help you avoid bringing these awful pests home with you:

  • Inspect your hotel room. Place your luggage in the bathroom while you pull back the sheets of the beds to check mattress seams for bed bugs or blood stains. Also, check the headboard, upholstered chairs, and dresser drawers. The headboard is an often-overlooked place to check. Because it is in close proximity to the bed and remains relatively undisturbed, it is one of their favorite hiding spots.
  • Don’t keep luggage on the floor or the beds. Luggage is best kept on any non-carpeted area of the room, even on the desk.
  • Don’t leave your clothes or purse spread throughout the room. If you are only staying a day or two, it’s even best not to unpack.
  • Place dirty laundry in a sealable bag and unpack them directly into the washing machine. The dryer is too hot for bed bugs to survive.

Should you find you have a bed bug infestation in your home or office, your first defense is to call a pest control company such as Ecola. Bed bugs are one of the hardest pests to eliminate on your own. They reproduce quickly, so the sooner a professional can be called in, the better. Ecola offers many natural pest control solutions for not only bed bug eradication but also mosquito abatement, spider removal, and ant removal, among others.

Ecola’s free termite inspections are not just for termites. If you suspect you’ve brought bed bugs home with you, call Ecola at 800-471-BUGS (2847).
