Know Your Pests: Identifying the Common Cockroach Types in Your Home

When it comes to unwanted visitors in our homes, cockroaches are among the most common and persistent. Recognizing the different types can help you understand what you’re dealing with and determine when to call in the experts at Ecola Termite and Pest Control.

German Cockroaches

These tiny pests are the most common in homes and apartments. They typically measure about half an inch long and have a light brown or tan color with two dark stripes running down their backs. German cockroaches love warm, humid environments and are often found in kitchens and bathrooms, hiding in cracks, behind appliances, or under sinks. Their rapid reproduction makes them particularly challenging to control.

American Cockroaches

Also known as palmetto bugs, American cockroaches are larger, reaching up to 2 inches in length. They are reddish-brown with a yellowish figure-eight pattern on their thorax. These cockroaches prefer damp, outdoor environments like sewers and storm drains but can venture indoors, especially in basements or crawl spaces. They are swift movers and tend to be more active at night

Oriental Cockroaches

Sometimes called “water bugs,” oriental cockroaches are about an inch long and dark brown to black. They prefer cooler, damp areas such as basements, drains, and crawl spaces. These pests are sluggish compared to others and are often found crawling across floors or emerging from drains.

Why Identification Matters

Knowing which cockroach type is invading your space helps determine the most effective treatment approach. All cockroaches can carry bacteria and trigger allergies, so prompt action is essential if you notice an infestation.
