Researchers Reveal Top 3 Pest Troubles for 2023

As we move into 2023, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has released its list of the top three pests that will continue to be a major problem this year. According to the press release, the leading pests are rodents, termites, and bed bugs.

Jim Fredericks, the VP of Public Affairs for the NPMA, warned that “Rodents, termites, and bed bugs are not just a nuisance, they can pose serious health and property risks to homeowners and business owners alike.” He emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures to avoid infestations and seeking professional help if an infestation is suspected.

Rodents, such as mice and rats, are known to spread diseases like salmonella and hantavirus. They can also cause damage to property by chewing through wires and insulation, leading to electrical fires. To prevent rodent infestations, homeowners are advised to seal cracks and gaps around the home, keep food in sealed containers, and remove clutter that can serve as nesting sites.

Termites, on the other hand, can cause structural damage to homes and businesses if left unchecked. They feed on wood and other cellulose-based materials, which can weaken the foundation of a building over time. To prevent termite infestations, it’s important to keep moisture levels low, repair leaks promptly, and have regular inspections by a licensed pest control professional.

Bed bugs, while not known to transmit diseases, can cause itchy bites and anxiety in people who are affected by them. They are notoriously difficult to get rid of, and can quickly spread throughout a building. To prevent bed bug infestations, homeowners are advised to inspect secondhand furniture before bringing it into the home, avoid placing luggage on hotel room floors, and regularly wash bedding in hot water.
